Summary

On March 4, 2011, RWE npower renewables announced to invest $1,630m for Willington gas power plant in south Derbyshire, the UK. If built, the plant would take about three years to construct, and will be located on the site of the former Willington A and B power stations. The two stations were privatised and sold off to National Power in the early 1990s and eventually closed in the mid 1990s The new gas-fired plant, ‘Willington C’ will have four combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) generating units, each around 500 MW in capacity, and four open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) generating units with a combined capacity of 400 MW – bringing a total capacity of up to 2,400 MW. After waiting for approval for the past two years, the plant has now got the green light to begin construction. The Willington power plant will play an extremely important role in south Derbyshire by providing secure electricity supplies to millions of homes as well as providing jobs and investment opportunities.
